GREENVILLE, S.C. - Western Carolina softball (12-9, 0-3 Southern Conference) dropped its Sunday game to Furman (7-12, 3-0 SoCon) 5-0, allowing the Paladins to complete the opening SoCon weekend sweep of the Catamounts.
Furman scored in the second inning. Morgan Hughey earned a lead-off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Pace. Hughey headed to third when Emily Boyer flew out to right field and scored off an RBI single by Nikki Legg.
The Paladins added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The inning began with a Catamount miscue allowing Hannah Pace to reach first. A single by Emily Boyer placed runners at first and second. Stephanie Pain hit an RBI single to score Hannah Pace and a sacrifice fly RBI by Stephanie Field plated Boyer for the second run of the inning.
Furman benefitted from Western Carolina's second error of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jessie Homesley singled and then with two errors a WCU miscue allowed her to score after stealing second.
Katie Michaels added a fifth run for Furman thanks to a sacrifice fly.
Katie King takes the loss falling to 6-5 on the season. King tossed six innings allowing seven hits and one earned run.
The Catamounts had just three hits in the game. Haley Pace, Amelia Griffin and Erin Foster each picked up a hit.
Western Carolina hosts UNC Wilmington Tuesday in its home opener. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
