ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Taking a break from Southern Conference action Tuesday, Western Carolina (2-9, 1-5 SoCon) suffered a 6-1 loss to UNC Asheville (6-7) from the Big South at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center in Asheville. The Catamounts fell just shy of the doubles point and could not regain the momentum. Western Carolina's No. 1 doubles team and Carolina Lainez at No. 2 singles picked up wins for the Catamounts.

The Catamounts were off to a good start in doubles as Ainhoa Iglesias-Díaz and Carolina Lainez fought for an 8-4 win in the No. 1 doubles contest. The Bulldogs answered with a decisive 8-5 victory in the No. 2 match, winning the point with the No. 3 match being defaulted by the Catamounts.

In singles play, UNC Asheville jumped out to a quick start that would be the difference in the match. Already being ahead two to nothing from the doubles point and the defaulted match at No. 6, the Bulldogs defeated Katie Barry in the No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-2.

The Catamounts were able to answer in the No. 2 singles match. After dropping the first set 7-5, Carolina Lainez handedly defeated Stephanie Schon 6-1, 6-0.

Though the rest of the matches would come down to the wire, it was the only answer the Catamounts could muster against the Bulldogs.

After winning the first set 6-4, WCU's Izabella Glinska fell in the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-4 in the final two. Devon Cavanaugh would need three sets to defeat Karen Jiménez Sarmiento in the No. 4 match, winning 6-1, 0-6, 6-2.

The Bulldogs would pick up the No. 3 match as well with Zoe Hamil besting Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz 7-5, 6-4.

Western Carolina will look to get back on track as it continues on its non-conference swing as the Catamounts take on Coastal Carolina Sunday in Cullowhee with a 10:00 a.m. start.
