MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer battled back from a 3-0 deficit, but fell short to College of Charleston, dropping a 3-2 decision Sunday at Patriots Point. The Catamounts are now 6-3-1 and 1-1 in the Southern Conference, while the Cougars improve to 6-4-0 and 2-0 in the SoCon.
College of Charleston scored all three of its goals in the first period. After bending for three goals in the first 45 minutes of play, including a score by the Cougars just 29 seconds into the match, the Catamounts buckled down and kept College of Charleston scoreless in the second 45 minutes of play. Freshman goalie Jennifer Lauer replaced starting redshirt junior Katie Jacobsin the second period, picking up a save and keeping the Cougars out of the net in the second period.
"We had a good second half and showed a lot of character on the road," said Head Soccer Coach Chad Miller, "But we must learn not to spot good teams three goals before we decided to respond."
Junior Laura Greb got Western Carolina one the scoreboard at the 48:42 mark. She scored off the far post from the left corner of the box for her third goal of season off an assist by Caitlyn Bradham.
Western Carolina pulled to within one goal at the 77:40 minute mark. After a foul was called on College of Charleston in the box, redshirt junior Samantha Hodgeconnected on penalty kick. It was Hodges' third goal in the last two games and she now leads the Catamounts with four total goals this season.
The Cougars' Sarah Schaidle scored the first Charleston goal 29 seconds into the match off an assist by Maryam Buazza. College of Charleston scored its second goal at 32:04 when Francesca Kentimos hit a long ball from 17 yards out. The final Cougar score was another long ball into the net from Megan Hilbert.
College of Charleston had 10 shots in the match and Western Carolina had six. Western Carolina returns home on Friday to begins its first Southern Conference weekend of the season by hosting Wofford at 7 p.m.
