BOONE. N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer (7-10, 3-6-2 Southern Conference) ended its season with a 1-0 loss to Appalachian State (10-7-1, 7-3-1 SoCon) Wednesday ending the Catamounts chance at a berth in the eight-team Southern Conference Tournament.
The Catamounts were denied a spot in the Southern Conference Tournament with Georgia Southern's 1-0 win over Davidson. The Eagles' victory secures the eighth and final spot in the tournament.
After a scoreless first half, Appalachian State struck at the 58:30 mark when Meggie Graham scored on a through ball from Hannah Coad that scooted past Catamount goalie Katie Jacobs. It was Graham's fourth goal of the season.
Western Carolina had a pair of scoring chances in the first half including a shot by senior Samantha Hodge that went high, just above the goal. The Catamounts had three shots in the second half and Appalachian State had a total of 12 shots in the match.
Freshman forward Markie-Lynn Studnicky ends her freshman campaign with nine goals, ranking her third in the Southern Conference record books. It is also the most goals scored by a Catamount women's soccer player since 2004.
