Women's Tennis Falls to Brevard, 2-5

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina's women's tennis team (0-2) fell to Brevard College (3-0) Thursday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex, 2-5. The Catamounts fall to 0-3 on the season while the Tornados improve to 2-0.

In the doubles matches, WCU dropped the No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-1. In the No. 1 match, Karen Jiménez and Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz defeated Claire Dillman and Michelle Prata. After jumping ahead to an early 3-1 lead, Brevard came back to even up the set at three. Iglesias Díaz and Jiménez then rallied to take the set 8-6. The win marked the first doubles win of the year for Jiménez and Iglesias Díaz and for the Catamounts this season. The Tornados picked up the doubles point with WCU not fielding a No. 3 doubles team.

In singles action, Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the No. 1 match. Iglesias Díaz won the first set 6-2. Brevard's Claire Dillman continued to fight, winning a close second set by the score of 6-4. In the tiebreak set, Dillman defeated Iglesias Díaz 10-7. In the No. 2 match, Karen Jiménez picked up her team-leading second victory of the season, defeating Michelle Prata 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Megan McLinden also picked up her first regular season win of her collegiate career, blanking Brevard's Lindsay Hostetter, 6-0, 6-0.

In the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches, WCU's Katie Barry and Sarah Walters fell to Brevard's Elise Labus (2-6, 2-6) and Jennifer Nyman (0-6, 0-6).

The Catamounts will again play at home this Sunday as the Blue Hose of Presbyterian come to Cullowhee for a 2 pm tilt.
