ELON, N.C. -Western Carolina women's basketball (13-16, 8-12 Southern Conference) dropped its final regular season game of the year 73-46 to Elon (16-13, 12-8 SoCon) Monday at Alumni Gym.

Going into the game, Western Carolina had already locked in the No. 7 seeded heading into the Southern Conference Tournament Friday. The only question was its opponent. After Monday night's games, the bottom of the bracket shook out to reveal the Catamounts would face No. 10 seed Georgia Southern.

The Catamounts and the Eagles will face each other for the second time in six days at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, in Kimmel Arena in Asheville. Western Carolina and Georgia Southern split in regular season action. GSU won in Statesboro 41-40 and WCU got the win, 55-46, in Cullowhee.

Elon was poised and ready to end its season with a win, on senior night. Western Carolina led just once, when Kaila'Shea Menendezhit the first bucket of the game, to give the Catamounts a 2-0 lead. After a sluggish start, by both teams, with only two points scored in the first three plus minutes, Elon tied the game at two and never looked back.

The Phoenix built a 31-15 lead at the half, shooting 42.9 percent in the first 20 minutes.

The Catamounts scored the first seven points of the second half, to trim the Phoenix lead to nine, 31-22. It would be the last time WCU would trail by single digits.

Western Carolina shot 32.7 percent from the field while Elon was near 50 percent at 48.1. Elon also ripped down 27 defensive rebounds.

Diamond Hunnicutt led Western Carolina with nine points.
