Playing its second match in two days, the Western Carolina women's tennis team fell to conference-foe Elon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C. Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts were blanked by the Phoenix, falling 7-0.
Elon came out strong in the match winning all three doubles matches to win the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, Elon's Frida Jansaker and Jordan Johnston downed Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz and Megan McLinden by an 8-1 count. The Catamounts were not able to win a game in the other two doubles matches, falling 8-0 and 8-0.
In the singles matches, freshman Megan McLinden fell to Jordan Johnston in the No. 1 match. The first set was a hard-fought contest with Johnston finally pulling away with a 6-4 win. Johnston won the second set 6-1.
In the No. 2 match, Elon's Barbora Lazarova downed Karen Jiménez, 6-1, 6-3. At the No. 3 spot, Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Viviana Stavreva. The rest of the Catamounts did not win a game in the No. 4 though No. 6 matches.
Western Carolina falls to 1-7, 0-2 SoCon with Elon improving to 10-4, 1-1 SoCon. The Catamounts return home from a four-match road swing as WCU welcomes mountain-rival UNC Asheville to Cullowhee on Wednesday, March 14 at 2 p.m.
