Tennis Defeated by UNCG in Final Regular-Season Match

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -

Western Carolina’s women’s tennis team ended its three-match home stand, falling 7-0 to UNC Greensboro in the last regular-season match of the season at the Catamount Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. UNC Greensboro finishes atop the Southern Conference standings with a perfect 10-0 record in conference play with a 16-5 overall record as the Catamounts fell to 0-10 in conference play with a 1-18 overall record.

In doubles competition, UNC Greensboro got off to a good start in the match, sweeping all three matches to win the doubles point.

In singles, Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz fell to Niltooli Wilkins 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 match. Karen Jiménez dropped the No.3 match to Annette Rios 6-3, 6-1 as both Sarah Walters and Taylor Casey lost in the No. 5 and No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-0.

Western Carolina will begin the 2012 Southern Conference Championships Thursday afternoon against rival Appalachian State at 2:00 p.m. with the match being played at the College of Charleston. The Catamounts are seeded eleventh while the Mountaineers are sixth. Western fell to Appalachian State 5-0 back on March 31 in a rain-shortened match. The winner will play No. 3 seed Furman on Friday. The championship will be held April 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the College of Charleston.
