DAVIDSON, N.C - Western Carolina women's soccer (5-5-1, 0-3 Southern Conference) fell to Davidson (3-6-3, 2-1 SoCon) 2-1 in overtime, off a penalty kick, Friday at Alumni Stadium.
Western Carolina was called for a hand ball inside the box setting up the penalty kick to start overtime. The Wildcats' Dani Johnson took the penalty kick at the 91:35 mark sailing it past freshman goalie Carly Tinstmanfor the winning goal. Tinstman entered the game in the second half and also played the minute plus in overtime.
The two teams were scoreless for the first 45 minutes of the match with Western Carolina on the attack for the first half. The Catamounts had seven shots, three on goal, but none could find the back of the net.
After missing two matches, junior Jenny Lauerwas back in goal for the first half of the game against Davidson holding the Wildcats scoreless.
Early in the second half it was Davidson, taking just two shots in the first half, who found the net. Sarah Tuggle took a direct kick inside the box, resulting from a foul on Western Carolina, scoring on the right side.
Sophomore forward Kelly Pannellknotted the match at one late in the second half. Pannell scored the goal from a pass by Markie-Lynn Studnicky off a loose ball she shot into the net to the near post.
Western Carolina out shot Davidson 15 to eight and had six shots on goal to the Wildcats' three. The telling stat was Davidson goalie Rachel Locke's six saves in the game.
Western Carolina travels to Georgia Southern Sunday with match time is set for 2 p.m.
