Catamount Women's Tennis Falls in First Round of SoCon Tournament

Burlington, N.C. - Sixth-seeded Chattanooga swept No. 11 Western Carolina, 4-0, in the first round of the 2013 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Burlington Tennis Center.

With WCU short-handed with just five available players, the Lady Mocs won by default at No. 3 doubles before Alexa Flynn and Kelsey Coots defeated Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol, 8-1, at No. 1 to give UTC the doubles point.

Chattanooga again claimed a point by default at the No. 6 singles position to take a 2-0 lead at the start of singles play. At No. 3, Coots posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nicole Nielly before Jones clinched the match for the Lady Mocs, downing SoCon All-Freshman team selection, Kissell, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1.

Western Carolina had three singles matches left unfinished as Chattanooga won the race to four points. In the No. 5 position, Erin Maguire was holding her own against Polk, 5-3, in the first set while Bettiol had just fallen in the first set, 6-4, to UTC's Claire Mulyadi. Having dropped the first set 6-0, Sara Ruiz Pajares was down just 3-2 in the second set at No. 2 singles at the time the match concluded.

UTC (18-4) advances to face the No. 3 seed Furman at 11 am Friday morning (April 19), at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C. WCU's season comes to a close with an overall record of 1-17.
