CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
Western Carolina Tennis (1-12, 0-7 SoCon) was defeated by Southern Conference rival Appalachian State (13-7, 5-3 SoCon) on Sunday afternoon, 7-0.
"We knew going into the match that App State had a solid team and I don't feel the 7-0 score reflected how the girls competed today," said head coach Chris Wollett. "I'm very pleased with how we competed in doubles today, especially at the No. 2 position, and the girls are looking forward to Wednesday's match against Furman."
WCU's Nicole Nielly and Sara Ruiz Pajares played at the No. 2 position during doubles competition, where they fell short of App State's Gabriela Celi and Jessica Thaggard, 8-4. In the No. 1 position, Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol owned the court with an 8-5 win over the Mountaineers.
Kissell grabbed the first set win in No. 1 singles, splitting with App State's Ellie Linsell 6-4, 3-6. Linsell sealed the win in the super tie-break set, winning 10-8. Nielly went back and forth at the No. 3 spot, but ultimately lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Pajares lost 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot; Bettiol fell short in the No. 4 match 6-3, 5-4; and Erin Maguire lost in the No. 5 position 6-1, 6-0.
