Weather Outlasts Catamounts, Pirates Women's Soccer

Sep 1, 2013

Greenville, N.C. - Prolonged weather delays that chased all four teams in the East Carolina Soccer Tournament from the pitch on Sunday eventually won the day as play was suspended just minutes into the night cap between Western Carolina and the host ECU Pirates.

Originally scheduled for a 2:00 pm kickoff, the two directional rivals endured afternoon weather delays with officials prompted to push the start of the final match back to 6:30 pm. However, just moments after kickoff in the battle of the Purple & Gold clad teams, lightning was again detected resulting in the postponement until Monday afternoon.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Labor Day Monday.

East Carolina fired the only salvo in the match just two and a half minutes in as Lexi Miller fired on Catamount keeper, Jenny Lauer, recording the save. Less than a minute later, Mother Nature fired another shot, chasing teams from the field and fans from the stands, ending Sunday's struggles and setting-up a Monday conclusion to the tournament.

Weather was the over-arching theme on Sunday in eastern North Carolina, playing havoc first with game one of Sunday's doubleheader between UNCG and UNC Wilmington. Following a 1:43 lightning delay, a fourth lightning strike forced the game to be called. The match will be replayed at 11:00 am on Monday at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
