MACON, Ga. - No. 6 seed Western Carolina women's soccer fell to No. 3 seed Mercer 2-1 Sunday, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Championships, at Bear Field. Mercer goes on to the SoCon Semi-finals Nov. 7 in Cullowhee, N.C.

The Catamounts end their season with an 8-7-4 record will Mercer improves to 12-5-2.

The first half ended scoreless as both teams presented stellar defensive efforts. Catamount goal keeper Carly Tinstman saved a goal in the first half when a Mercer shot was headed to the goal but Tinstman slapped it out with the tips of her fingers.

Deep into the second half, Mercer was the one to strike first. In the 65th minute Sarah Daane scored off a long shot after receiving a pass from Kristen Hagaman.

Western Carolina knotted the game at one, less than three minutes later, after Markie-Lynn Studnicky headed the ball to the center of the net from just outside the goal.

Studnicky was assisted by Haven Leland. The Bears took the lead again, 2-1, in the 83rd minute after Lauren Gassie sent a header to the back of the net. Gassie received a cross from Tess Patton, who was on the right side of the field, and then directed it to the center of the goal.

Western Carolina will host the 2014 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championships Nov. 7 and Nov. 9. The first semi-final game, featuring No. 1 seed Samford and No. 4 seed ETSU will begin at 5 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The night-cap, with No. 2 Furman and No. 3 Mercer, will be at 7:30 p.m. The finals will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 9.
