CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Lindsay Simpson led the team in scoring for the second straight game, with 14 points, and Makensey Campbell added 11 as Western Carolina women's basketball fell to Chattanooga 68-46 Monday in McKenzie Arena.
Simpson and Campbell combined for 25 of the Catamounts 46 points and also combined for seven of Western Carolina's eight three pointers. Simpson was 4-of-9 from behind the three point arch and Campbell was a perfect 3-for-3.
Eight of Western Carolina's 14 field goals were three pointers. The Catamounts fall to 11-13 and 5-8 in the Southern Conference while Chattanooga improves to 21-3 and 13-0 in the SoCon.
Western Carolina built an early 5-3 advantage against Chattanooga to start the game but got behind when the team went over nine minutes without scoring. From 13:57 for 4:36 in the game, Chattanooga scored 16 unanswered points.
The Catamounts only trailed by 11, 28-17, at the half thanks in part to a pair of three pointers by Simpson in the final minute of the game. In fact, Simpson scored 11 consecutive points for Western Carolina from the end of the first half until 18:06 left in the second.
Simpson's three-pointer, at 18:06 left in the game, was Western Carolina's last field goal until Campbell drained a three pointer with 11:42 left on the clock. In that Catamount scoring draught, Chattanooga took a 10 point lead and ballooned it to 20, 46-26, before Campbell's trey cut it to 17. Between Simpson and Campbell's three pointer junior guard Justin Taylor was 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Chattanooga shot 52.9 percent from the field and connected on 28 field goals, five from behind the three point line. The Lady Mocs only out-rebounded WCU 36-30 and the Catamounts held Chattanooga to eight offensive rebounds.
The Lady Mocs forced 19 Western Carolina turnovers getting 29 points off those turnovers.
Chattanooga had three players score in double figures with Ashlen Dewart and Alex Black each scoring 11 and Taylor Hall adding 11.
Western Carolina returns home Saturday to host Elon at 2 p.m. in the Ramsey Center. It is the first of two straight home games for the Catamounts.
