Western Carolina earned wins a the No.1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles, but fell 4-3 to Wofford Saturday afternoon at the tennis courts at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
Wofford earned the doubles point as Catherine Martin and Mareli Sanchez defeated WCU's Shannon Bettiol and Erin Maguire 8-4 at the No. 2 spot. The Terriers also picked up a default win at the No. 3 spot. The completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win from Julia Paulson and Sarah Evans over WCU's Stacia Kissell and Megan McLinden.
Wofford, who picked up a point when WCU defaulted the No. 6 spot, took a 3-0 lead when Paulson defeated Sara Ruiz Pajares, 6-0, 6-0. The Terriers clinched the match when Kalli Karas defeated Maguire, 6-2, 6-0.
However, the Catamounts continued to fight and earned their first point of the match when Bettiol topple Audrey Coventry, 6-2, 6-3. Bettiol has now won her individual match in two of the last three matches.
McLinden followed winning the second Catamount point in a tiebreaker. McLinden fell in the first to Martin 6-4, but rallied in the second with a 6-3 win. She carried the momentum into the tiebreaker taking a 10-8 decision for the win.
Kissell continued her tear through the 2014 season notching a 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 win over Evans in the final match of the day.
WCU will return to the courts at Mercer on February 13 at 2 p.m. for its next match.
