Catamounts Drop Home Finale to No. 63 Furman

Cullowhee, N.C. - In the season's final home match, Western Carolina's women's tennis team fell to No. 63 Furman, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the tennis courts of the Catamount Athletic Complex.

In doubles competition, Western Carolina (1-16-1, 0-8) dropped the No. 1 match as Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol fell to Alex Moreno-Kaste and Katherine Oudin, 8-3. Furman (15-5, 8-0) clinched the doubles point with a victory at the No. 3 match as Karlee Bryde and Amanda Murray defeated Sara Ruiz Pajares and Erin Maguire, 8-1.

In the last doubles contest, the No. 2 matchup, WCU's Megan McLinden and Nicole Nielly fell to Blair Martin and Margaret Boyette, 8-2.

In singles competition, Bettiol dropped the No. 2 contest to Oudin in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 3 matchup, McLinden fell to Bryde, 6-2, 6-2.

Furman clinched the match victory at the No. 4 matchup as Martin defeated Ruiz Pajares, 6-3, 6-0. The Catamounts' Nielly dropped the No. 5 singles match to Murray, 6-2, 6-2. WCU's No. 6, Maguire lost her matchup in straight sets to Boyette, 6-3, 6-4.

After dropping three consecutive singles matches, Kissell again found the winning formula at the No. 1 singles slot, defeating Moreno-Kaste in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

The Purple & Gold travel to Elon for two matches this weekend with Longwood on Friday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m. and Elon Saturday, April 12 at noon to end the regular season.
