RALEIGH, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer (1-3-3) battled back from a 0-1 deficit, against ACC member North Carolina State(2-4-1), to earn a 1-1 double overtime tie Thursday at Dail Soccer Field.
Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Western Carolina forced overtime thanks to a free kick. At 82:33 on the clock, junior Amanda Schwartz took the free kick and passed it to junior forward Kelly Pannell who found the back of the net.
It was Pannell's first goal of the season and the ninth of her career. The goal was also Western Carolina's sixth of the season.
NC State took the early 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game, the Wofpack struck garnering a 1-0 lead. Dana Tomayko scored at the end of a l multiple-pass sequence. Franziska Jaser 30 yards out, finds Jenna Kalwa, nice through ball, Tomayko finishes.
After being held to just two shots in the first half, Western Carolina had eight shots combined in the second half and pair of overtimes. The Catamounts dominated both overtimes and had multiple chances to snap the 1-1 tie. At the 106th minute, Western Carolina got back-to-back looks at the goal on shots by Schwartz and Kimberly Sullivan. Both were saved by Wolfpack goalie Karly Gustafson.
Sophomore goalkeeper Carly Tinstman bounced back from giving up the early first half goal to NC State by denying the Wolfpack for the ensuing 106 minutes of the game. She ended the game with seven saves and her record moves to 1-3-2.
Western Carolina has played to double overtime in four of its last five games with a record of 0-1-3 in those four double OT games.
Western Carolina completes its six-game road swing Saturday at Campbell. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
