RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sophomore forward Sherae Bonner made the most of her first start of the season with a double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds, as Western Carolina women's basketball fell to North Carolina State 86-55 Wednesday in Holliday Gymnasium at Broughton High School.
Bonner's double-double was her first of the season. Fellow sophomore Kyia Hough tied her career-high with 11 points and senior Lindsay Simpson just missed scoring in double figures with nine.
The Wolfpack scored early and often, outscoring Western Carolina 34-8, in the first period. NC State used runs of seven and 16 to build the commanding first period lead and also went 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Western Carolina did battle back scoring 23 points in second period to claw back into the game a bit. The Catamounts only gave up 29 total points to the Wolfpack in the second half, 17 in the third and 12 in the fourth.
North Carolina State shot 47.8 percent from the field and tied its season-high with 11 three-pointers. Western Carolina hit two three-pointers both in the second half.
NC State's Miah Spencer led all scorers with 23 points -- the only Wolfpack player to score in double figures.
Turning Point
North Carolina State outscored Western Carolina 32-8 in the first period setting the pace early. Western Carolina scored two points, a jumper by freshman Raziyah Farrington, in the final five minutes of the first period.
Individual Leaders
- Bonner had 14 points and 10 rebounds - her first double-double of the season.
- Hough tied her season-high with 10 points.
- Hough was 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
