After tying the game at 52 with 1:50 left to play, the Western Carolina men's basketball team went cold as Morehead State outscored the Catamounts 8-0 down the stretch to take a 60-52 victory in the Gotham Classic Sunday night. WCU led by as many as eight points in the game but turnovers and rebounding tilted the game in the Eagles favor.
The Catamounts drop to 4-7 on the year including a 0-7 mark in road contests. The Eagles improved to 6-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 at home.
Senior Justin Browning led the Catamount attack as he scored 15 points, grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and picked up a career-best five steals for his first career double-double. It also marked the first time in Browning's career that he has led the Catamounts in scoring.
Senior Torrion Brummitt had a rough night as he was only able to play 14 minutes due to foul trouble. Despite the minutes, Brummitt scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds to finish second on the team in both categories.
Freshman Elijah Pughsley added six points while senior Mike Brown and sophomore Devin Peterson each had five.
Senior Rhett Harrelson's 39-game 3-point streak ended as he went 0-4 from downtown in the game. Harrelson ended with four points all of which came at the free throw line.
After a game in which the Catamounts shot over 70 percent from the field in the second half, WCU was only able to hit 30.6 percent Sunday night including 28.1 percent in the second half.
The Eagles won the rebound battle 41-32 including collecting 14 offensive boards which led to 14 second chance points. They also won the turnover battle 18-15 which led to a 19-14 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Eagles had four players reach double-figures led by DeJuan Marrero's double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Catamounts will now travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on the University of Pittsburgh in their Gotham Classic finale on Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 7 pm.
