Catamounts Fall in Neutral Site Match with Longwood

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team fell 6-1 Monday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C., against Longwood University. Senior Megan McLinden picked up WCU's lone singles win as she defeated Anna Pelak in the No.2 match.

McLinden is now 3-2 on the year including 2-1 at the No. 2 singles spot. Junior Shannon Bettiol fell in a tough match at No. 1 to Malin Allgurin. Allgurin took the opening set 6-4 before Bettiol battled back to win the second set 7-5. The third set was all Allgurin as she won 6-1.

Junior Erin Maguire also put up a tough battled at No. 4. She fell in the opening set 6-4 to Paloma Alatorre. She then took the second set 6-3 before eventually falling 6-0 in the third set. Junior Nicole Nielly fell at No. 3, 6-4, 7-5 while freshman Montse Mesalles fell at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1.

Once again the Catamounts had to forfeit the No. 6 singles and No.3 double due to only having five players. The Lancers won both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point. The No.2 match went into a tiebreaker but Longwood was able to claim the victory, 8-7.

WCU falls to 1-4 on the year while the Lancers improve to 3-3.

WCU will be back in action Saturday, March 7 at Mercer for the first Southern Conference match of the year. Action will begin at 1 pm.
