Mountaineers Down the Catamounts, 7-0

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team suffered its fifth-straight loss Sunday afternoon as former Southern Conference foe Appalachian State shut out the Catamounts 7-0. WCU was able to win the No. 1 doubles match but with a forfeit at No. 3 and the Mountaineers winning at No. 2, Appalachian State claimed the doubles point.

Senior Megan McLinden and junior Shannon Bettiol teamed up to win at No. 1 as they downed Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure 8-4. Freshman Montse Mesalles and junior Nicole Nielly fell at No. 2, 8-4.

Bettiol and Mesalles put up tough fights in singles action. Bettiol dropped the first set at No. 2 6-4 before coming back to win a tiebreaker in the second set 7-6 (4). The overall match had been clinched by the time Bettiol and Gabrielle Wreder went to the third set so they played a third set tiebreaker and Bettiol fell 12-10.

Mesalles won her opening set 6-2 but dropped the second set 6-4. Her match with McKayla Zupan also went to a third set after the overall match had been clinch so they also played a third set tiebreaker and Zupan came out victorious 10-4.

Nielly fell at No. 3 singles 7-6 (6), 6-1 while McLinden fell at No. 1 6-3, 6-2. Junior Erin Maguire also fell at No. 4 6-1, 6-3.

The Catamounts will get back to conference action this Wednesday as they travel to Furman for a 3 p.m. match.
