CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Western Carolina softball (19-25, 8-6 Southern Conference) was swept by Chattanooga (29-9, 10-1 SoCon) 7-1, 8-3 Saturday at Frost Stadium.

Chattanooga scored in four of the six innings it was at bat and scored multiple runs in two of those innings to take game one 7-1.

A Western Carolina error and a walk and hits batman set up the first run for Chattanooga in the bottom of the second. Jordan Garrett gave up five straight singles in the bottom of the third allowing the Mocs to score four runs.

Western Carolina avoided being shutout scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning. Heather Chastain hit a two out double followed by a single by Taylor Sigmon. Pinch runner Emily Helton, who came in for Chastain, scored on a double steal moving Sigmon to second.

Garrett was replaced by freshman Courtney Buchanan fifth inning. Buchanan gave up three runs. Garrett takes the loss giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits and striking out two. Buchanan went two innings allowing three runs on three hits. Western Carolina had just four hits in the game, a single by Kara Salvo, a pair of singles by Taylor Sigmon and a double by Heather Chastain.

The Catamounts took an early 1-0 lead over Chattanooga scoring a run in the top of the first. Western Carolina took advantage of a pair of Mocs' errors to load the bases and Chastain hit an RBI single to give WCU the advantage. The hit by Chastain moves her consecutive games with a hit to eight straight games.

The lead was short-lived as Chattanooga scored two runs in the bottom of the first to give Chattanooga the lead. The Mocs scored their third run of the game on a solo homerun by Anyssa Robles to start the second inning.

Garrett started the game for Western Carolina and tossed a complete first inning before being replaced in the second by Sigmon. Garrett gave up a run and a walk in the bottom of the second inning before Sigmon came in.

After tossing two scoreless innings, Sigmon gave up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the top fifth Western Carolina scored a pair of runs off RBI singles by Crystal Cyr and Chastain. It was the second RBI single by Chastain in the game.

Western Carolina squandered a solid scoring chance in the top of the sixth inning when Brooke Coggins walked and Karley Harkey singled. With runners on second and third, and one out, Courtney Price struck out looking and Victoria Mariscal flew out to left field to end the scoring chance.

Chattanooga tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Garrett takes the loss and falls to 13-12 on the year.

The three runs scored by Western Carolina is the most runs the Catamounts have scored against the Mocs since plating eight runs in the 11-8 loss in 2013.

Western Carolina and Chattanooga will wrap up the three-game Southern Conference series at 2 p.m. Sunday. However with a threat of rain imminent, the game time may be in flux.
