Catamounts Fall to Chattanooga at the SoCon Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team fell 4-0 in the first round of the 2015 Southern Conference Championship to No. 2 seed Chattanooga. The Catamounts end their season with six wins which is the most since 2002 and look forward to the 2016 season in which they return all six members of their 2015 squad.

WCU lost the doubles point after UTC took the No. 1 match 8-1 and the No. 2 match 8-3. Freshman Montse Mesalles and junior Erin Maguire were leading 3-2 in the No. 3 match when play was stopped due to the clinching of the point. The pair had jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Mocs had cut the deficit to 3-2 as the match was halted.

Senior Megan McLinden was the first to fall in singles as Kayla Jones took the No.1 singles match 6-2, 6-0 to capture Chattanooga's second point of the match.

The Mocs would take a 3-0 lead after junior Nicole Nielly fell at No. 3 to Kaylene Chadwell 6-1, 6-2. The fourth and deciding point came at No. 5 as junior Erin Maguire dropped the match 6-1, 6-0 to Alison Storie.

Both Mesalles and junior Shannon Bettiol took the opening sets of their respective matches. Mesalles led 6-0, 3-4 in her No. 6 match at the stoppage of play while Bettiol was in a tough 6-1, 0-6, 1-3 match-up at No. 2.

The only other unfinished match was at No. 4 where freshman Elizabeth Ansari trailed Southern Conference Freshman of the Year Samantha Caswell 6-3, 5-1.
