Playing in their third match in three days, the Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped a tough match at in-state foe North Carolina Central, 5-2. WCU picked up its two wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as junior Erin Maguire and freshman Montse Mesalles earned victories.
Maguire defeated Mia Ramic at No. 4 7-5, 6-4 while Mesalles won at No. 5 over Jamie Rogers 1-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7.
With the loss the Catamounts fell to 4-12 on the season.
The Eagles took the doubles point after winning at No. 1, 8-2, and at No. 2, 8-6. The match at No. 3 singles was a close one for junior Nicole Nielly. She dropped the first set 6-3 before earning a 7-6 (4) win in the second set. With the overall match already secured for NCCU the third set was a 10-point tiebreaker and NCCU's Ekaterina Nekrasova won 11-9.
Senior Megan McLinden dropped the first set at No. 1 in a tiebreaker 7-6 (6) before falling in the second set 6-2. At No. 2 junior Shannon Bettiol fell to Rebecca Wood 6-4, 6-2.
The Catamounts will return to action next Wednesday as they host Chattanooga in a Southern Conference match at 2 pm at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
