GREENSBORO, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (15-23, 4-4 Southern Conference) split the doubleheader with UNCG (15-16, 1-7 SoCon) winning game one 7-1 and dropping game two 2-1.
Western Carolina 7, UNCG 1
Western Carolina had a solid and steady offense and strong pitching from senior Jordan Garrett and junior Taylor Sigmon to take game one against UNCG.
Garrett tossed five innings in game one allowing one run on two hits and struck out two. Garrett's lone run she gave up was a solo homerun by the Spartans' Danielle Vega in the second inning. Sigmon came into the game in relief in the sixth inning throwing two scoreless frames facing eight batters and striking out two.
The Catamounts struck early scoring a run in the first inning. Vicoria Mariscal scored the first run of the game for WCU when she drew a one out walk and moved to second and third from a pair of wild pitches. Kara Salvo followed with an RBI double to right field plating Mariscal.
Heather Chastain's led-off single to left center set up Western Carolina's second run of the game. UNCG's third wild pitch of the game pushed Chastain from first all the way to their. With one out, Karley Harkey ground out to second but picked up an RBI when Chastain scored.
After going scoreless in the third, Western Carolina scored runs in three of the four remaining innings. The Catamounts sent three runs in in the fourth inning.
Western Carolina's first two runs in the fourth were set up by UNCG errors as Chastain and Amber Kimrey each reached on Spartan miscues. Crystal Cyr's two out RBI scored Chastain and Kimrey. Cyr scored off an RBI single by Abigail Daniels.
In the fifth inning, WCU added lone run set up by a one out single by Courtney Price. With two outs, Chastain singled to right center moving Price to third. Kimrey earned an RBI when she singled past the short stop to score Price.
Daniels' second hit of the game, a double to left center, set up a run in the sixth inning. Salvo notched her second RBI of the game when she singled to left field scoring Daniels.
The Catamounts had nine hits in the game with multiple hits from Daniels (2), Salvo (2) and Chastain (2).
UNCG 2, Western Carolina 1
Garrett started game two as well and went four innings. She did not give up a run, allowed two hits and struck out five. Sigmon replaced Garrett in the pitching circle to open the fifth inning.
The only runs in the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. UNCG's scoring began when Nicole Thomas hit a homerun to left center. Sigmon gave up a total of two runs in the inning that clinched the game for UNCG.
Sigmon takes the loss in the falling to 3-4 on the year allowing two runs on three hits and struck out one.
The Catamounts attempted a rally in the top of the seventh when Cyr hit a one out homerun over the left center field wall. But WCU rallied ended with a pair of fly outs to end the game.
The Catamounts and Spartans will play the rubber match Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
