CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer (1-0-1) drew a 1-1 double overtime tie with Winthrop (0-0-1) Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Eagles got a late first-half goal, with four minutes left in the opening half, when JoJo Taylor scored an unassisted goal inside the box. Western Carolina knotted the game at the 81:37 minute on an unassisted goal by freshman Sayres McKenna after Winthrop was called for a foul.
The Catamounts had their chances at scoring with 22 shots and six on goal. Western Carolina looked like it might have tied the game early in the second half, at 53:31, when freshman Hannah Sink's shot just skimmed past the left side of the post. It was one of many near misses for the Catamounts in the game.
Turning Point
At the 81:37 mark, in the second half, Winthrop was called for a foul on the left center of the box about 10 yards out. Freshman McKenna was called to take the kick. McKenna sailed the ball over the wall of Eagle players and sent the ball into goal on the upper left side of the net.
Individual Leaders
McKenna scored her first Catamount career goal.
Redshirt senior Lauren Martin got the first start of her Catamount career.
Inside the Box Score
- Winthrop's Taylor scored unassisted goal at 41:20 in the first half when a battle for the ball, about three yards out, bounded to Taylor who knocked the ball in.
- McKenna's goal was off a set piece, after a Winthrop foul. McKenna sailed the ball over the goalies head, with a wall of Eagles in front of her, for the game-tying goal.

- The Winthrop goal is the first time, dating back to a regular season game and two exhibition games, an opponent has scored on Western Carolina this season.
