Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir:
Thoughts on the game:
“We didn’t play very well. I think our defense did a great job early on, and did a nice job holding them to seven points at halftime. On offense, we just never got in rhythm. It was a poor route, a bad ball, a missed blocking assignment and penalties are killing us. We just are not playing very clean.”
“We as coaches have got to stress the little things like routes and throwing and catching. We were just off synch all night long. Credit The Citadel Bulldogs; their defense played hard and kept us out of rhythm all night.”
On putting Saturday’s league-opening loss into perspective:
“All of our goals and aspirations are still right there. You either learn from this three hours, or its going to be a long season. We have a good football team and I love this team. We are going to practice for the Catamounts to get better. We are going to clean stuff up, be efficient. We have all these weapons and we are not clicking right now offensively.”
“At the end of the day it’s about us. The Citadel is a great football team. Mike Houston has done a great job. Their players play hard and we knew that coming into the ball game. At the end of the day, we did not give ourselves a chance. We were down in the red zone a couple of times and didn’t come away with it. We’re just not clicking for whatever reason on offense right now but we’ve got the talent there and it’s our job as coaches to get it out of them.”
