ASHEVILLE, N.C. -
The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams were in action Saturday morning at the UNC Asheville Invitational. The men took the team championship in an eight team field while the women finished second. The Catamounts also won both individual titles with freshman Liam Brooks winning the men's 8K race and freshman Kaitlyn Lingard winning the women's 5K title.
The men placed eight runners in the top-20 while the women had six in the top-20.
The men finished ahead of UNCA, North Carolina A&T, Wofford and Presbyterian while the women topped Wofford, North Carolina A&T and Presbyterian but fell to UNCA.
Brooks led the men after finishing first with a time of 25:25.49. Junior JC Cornett came across next for the Catamounts in fifth after crossing the line in 25:58.07.
The women's top-two finishers were Lingard who won the race with a time of 18:18.43 while sophomore Madison Goode came across next in sixth after stopping the clock at 19:07.78.
Freshman Joel Freeman came across third for the men and 11th overall with a time of 26:29.39. Rounding out WCU's scoring five were junior Tommy Connell in 12th and freshman Harrison Conner in 16th. Connell stopped the clock in 26:34.41 while Conner turned in a time of 26:46.34.
The final top-20 runners for the men were senior Jamie Bigby (17th, 26:52.28), freshman Caleb Albrecht (19th, 26:56.27) and freshman Jordan Kokoska (20th, 27:01.90).
The women's third finisher was sophomore Laney Browder who stopped the clock in 19:16.71 which placed her eighth. Freshman Christina Nikolaou came across next in 15th with a time of 19:29.14 while freshman Emma Hand rounded out the scoring five by finishing 17th with a time of 19:34.08. The final Catamount in the top-20 was freshman Trinity Wiles who finished 20th after completing the course in 19:42.64.
The Catamounts will take a week off before returning to action on Oct. 3 at the Upstate Invitational hosted by USC Upstate.
