Brown Surpasses 1,000 Career Points in Loss

Box Score Jan. 16, 2016

Final Stats

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After leading by as many as nine points in the first half and trailing by just two at the break, the Western Carolina men's basketball team saw Samford pull away in the second half in route to an 84-68 victory. The Catamounts placed three scorers in double-figures led by senior Mike Brown who became the 46th Catamount to reach the 1,000 career point mark after a 21-point outing.

Brown also became just the 10th Catamount all-time with 1,000 career points, 500 rebounds and 100 steals.

The Catamounts started the game out with a bang taking a 14-5 lead out of the gate but the Bulldogs quickly fought their way back into the game and eventually took a two-point lead into the break. A 15-0 spurt to open up the second half gave the Bulldogs a commanding 17-point lead and they would never trail the rest of the game. The Catamounts were able to get within 10 with eight minutes to play but that would be as close as they would come.

WCU shot just 42.9 percent from the field in the second half while Samford torched the nets at 64.0 percent.

Brown led the Catamounts with 21 points and seven assists while seniors Torrion Brummitt and Rhett Harrelson each scored 14. Freshman Marc Gosselin came off the bench to secure a team-high seven rebounds.

Samford had three scorers in double-figures as well led by freshman Wyatt Walker who scored a career-best 26 points while grabbing 12 rebounds.

The Catamounts will now return home to face The Citadel on Thursday night at 7:30 pm. The Catamounts have lost just once at home this season and look to get back on track after dropping two in a row on the road.
