CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Sophomore guard Kyia Hough drained the game-winning bucket as Western Carolina women's basketball picked up its first Southern Conference win of the season with a 74-72 victory over Wofford Monday in the Ramsey Center.
Sophomore guard Ace Easter scored a career-high 27 points and connected on a career-best six three-pointers. Fellow sophomore Sherae Bonner recorded her fourth double-double on the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
With the game tied at 72, Western Carolina forced a Wofford turnover with four seconds remaining when the Terriers' Jordan Frazier coughed up the ball. Hough scooped it up and drove to the basket laying it in for her 10th point of the game and the winning bucket.
It was a long-ball affair as the teams shot a combined 16 three pointers in the game with WCU nailing nine to Wofford's seven. The Terriers also benefitted from 29 trips to the free throw line hitting 23. However, it was Western Carolina's tenacious defense and never say die attitude that resulted in a "W" for the Catamounts.
Western Carolina was down by as much as 11 points in the second period. WCU trailed in the game until 3:59 left in the third period when Easter drained a three. The Catamounts led by seven, 58-51, at the end of the third period and led until 3:42 left in the fourth. After that, it was a back-and-forth affair leading to the score being tied at 72 and setting up the game-winning shot by Hough.
