CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Five players scored in double figures as Western Carolina women's basketball, picking up its second straight Southern Conference victory, defeating UNCG 84-72 Saturday in the Ramsey Center.
Sophomores Sherae Bonner and Julia Brown along with freshman Raziyah Farrington each led the Catamounts with 14 points. Ace Easter followed with 12 and Lindsay Simpson poured in 10. UNCG's leading scorer, senior guard Lucy Mason, led all scorers with 20 points.
After the game was tied 16 times, Western Carolina took the advantage by outscoring the Spartans 18-6 in the final six minutes. With the game tied at 66, with 5:48 left, sophomore Julia Brown drained her second three-pointer of the fourth period to push the Catamounts to a 69-66 lead and WCU would never trail again.
The Catamounts were 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the last 42 seconds of the game to ice the game. Overall, Western Carolina was 12-of-24 from the free throw line.
Western Carolina outscored UNCG in three of the four periods and also scored 20 or more points in three of those four periods.
Turning Point
With 5:48 left in the game, tied at 66, Brown nailed her second three-pointer of the fourth period to give Western Carolina a 69-66 lead and the Catamounts never trailed again.
