In a game that featured 76 free throws and saw four players foul out, the Wofford College Terriers downed the Western Carolina Catamounts 85-66 inside Benjamin Johnson Arena Saturday night. WCU shot just 27 of the 76 free throws as the Terriers scored 37 points at the charity stripe to help secure the victory.
WCU was without senior starter Rhett Harrelson who missed the game due to injury. Senior forward Torrion Brummitt left the game in the second half after scoring 14 points and dishing out four assists in 21 minutes of action. Senior Justin Browning fouled out after just 11 minutes in the game and finished with six points. The two other Catamounts to foul out were Devin Peterson who had six points in 29 minutes and Marc Gosselin who scored a career-high seven points in 18 minutes.
The loss drops WCU record to 8-14 overall and 3-6 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers improved to 10-12 overall and 6-3 in SoCon action.
Senior Mike Brown was able to stay in the game with four fouls as he led the Catamounts with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Freshman starter Elijah Pughsley also ended the game with four fouls as he scored five points and grabbed a career-high tying four rebounds.
WCU trailed for most of the first half as Wofford took advantage of the free throw line scoring 19 of their 39 first half points at the charity stripe. An old-fashioned 3-point play by Brown with 28 seconds left in the period gave WCU just its second lead of the game and it proved to be the last basket of the stanza. WCU carried a 40-39 lead into the break. The Catamounts only other lead in the period also came on a Brown 3-point play as he hit the and-one free throw with 14:16 left to give WCU a 14-13 lead.
A 13-0 run by the Terriers that began at the 6:15 mark of the second half proved to be the difference as Wofford took a four point lead and extended it to 17 in just over two minutes of play. The Catamounts struggled at times having to play without seniors Brummitt, Harrelson and Browning for long stretches.
The Terriers were led by Fletcher Magee who scored 18 points including nine at the free throw line. Justin Gordon added 16 points and seven rebounds including 10 points at the charity stripe. Three Terriers took 10 or more free throw attemots includiung 17 by Justin Gordon.
The 37 made free throws by Wofford were the most made against WCU since Vanderbilt made 38 last season. The loss also marks the 12th-straight road loss for the Catamounts this season. WCU's 0-12 start on the road is the worst start to a season since the 2000-01 season when WCU went 0-14 in road games.
WCU will now turn its focus to a road trip to UNCG and VMI next Thursday and Saturday.
