GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Western Carolina women’s tennis team continued with its winning ways with a 6-1 defeat over North Carolina A&T. The Catamounts swept doubles for the weekend to move to 3-1 on the season.

”Overall I am excited about how the girls are playing right now,” said head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins. “We knew that we had to step up today and play some good tennis to get the win this afternoon.”

WCU only needed one win in doubles to gain the point with No. 3, sophomore Montse Mesalles and senior Nicole Nielly, having won by default. This allowed seniors Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol to clinch the doubles point with their 6-2 win over Khalia Powell and Sheyla Fabiana Ramirez at No. 1.

Sophomore Elizabeth Ansari and freshman Alexa Webb finished out doubles taking down No. 2 Nadia Hilton-Adams and Angelica Maria Ochoa Martinez 6-4.

“I still feel our best tennis is ahead of us and can’t wait to see what we can do as a team this spring,” stated Kissell Eddins. “We are off to a great start and have to take things one match at a time.”

Senior Erin Maguire at No. 6 got the first singles point by virtue of default, which put the Catamounts up 2-0.

No. 4 Savannah Taranto continued with her hot play defeating Staisha Cain 6-0, 6-1. Ansari followed up taking down Hilton-Adams at No. 5 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the match.

The Aggies got their lone point at No. 3 when Powell out battled Bettiol 6-2, 6-3. No. 1 Kissell defeated Ramirez 6-0, 6-4 and at No. 2 McLinden picked up the victory over Martinez 6-4, 6-4.

”Our preparation now will be geared towards a tough Davidson team when we are back on the road next Sunday,” said Kissell-Eddins.

The 3-1 Catamounts next travel to Davidson, N.C. to take on former Southern Conference foe Davidson on Feb. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
