Catamount Cross Country Returns to Asheville

The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams returned to Asheville, N.C., to compete in the Asheville Cross Country Challenge Saturday morning. The Catamount women took third out of an 11 team field while the men placed fifth out of 12 teams. Sophomore Kaitlyn Lingard was WCU's top individual finisher as she placed second in the women's 5K race with a blazing time of 18:33.78.

Freshman Shawnda Martin took fifth on the women's side as she stayed under 19 minutes as well with a time of 18:58.56.

The men's top finisher was sophomore Liam Brooks who completed the 8K course in 26:06.47. Freshman Justin Tucker crossed next for the Catamounts as he took 20th overall with a time of 26:55.27.

High Point won the women's team race while Campbell finished second. WCU finished ahead of Winthrop, UNC Asheville and several others. Mars Hill won the men's side followed by Radford, UNC Asheville and High Point. WCU defeated four teams for the Big South Conference including Winthrop, Campbell, Longwood and Presbyterian.

The men's next two finishers placed 23rd and 24th, respectively. Freshman Isaiah Hanna finished the course in 26:59.03 while sophomore Jordan Bostian stopped the clock at 27:02.97. The final men's scorer was sophomore Caleb Albrecht who came in 44th overall with a time of 27:41.14.

The women's third finisher was junior Madison Goode who placed 20th overall after completing the course in 19:44.95. The Catamounts final two scorers were sophomores Trinity Wiles and Jada Blake. Wiles placed 26th overall with a time of 20:07.03 while Blake came across 31st after stopping the clock in 20:14.73.

The Catamounts will now begin training for the VertCross Invitational hosted by High Point University which will take place Friday, Oct. 14 at 3 pm.
