SAVANNAH, Ga. - Western Carolina softball split day one of the Lady Tiger Classic, to open 2016, falling to Jacksonville State 7-6 before bouncing back to defeat Drexel 7-1.

Turning Point
Jacksonville State scored seven runs in the first inning, after Western Carolina took the early 2-0 lead, at the top of the inning.

How it Happened
- Western Carolina opened the game scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first off a two-run homerun by senior second baseman Crystal Cyr.
- Western Carolina gave up four walks, hit a batter and committed an error aiding Jacksonville State in scoring seven runs in the first inning. - After yielding seven runs in the first inning, Western Carolina held Jacksonville State scoreless in the ensuing five innings.
- In the second inning, the Catamounts scored a pair of runs that started with senior Victoria Mariscal drawing a walk. Mariscal scored on an RBI single by Amber Kimrey and Kimrey scored on an RBI double by Courtney Price.
- Western Carolina fell short of tying or taking the lead in the seventh inning scoring two runs to come within one run of Jacksonville State. With one out, and reaching on a fielder's choice, Price scored off an RBI single by Cyr. Pinch runner, for Cyr, Kassandra Flores crossed the plate on an RBI single up the middle by Taylor Sigmon.

Inside the Box Score
- Junior Courtney Buchanan's first start of the season was short-lived as she faced four batters walking three and allowing four runs.
- Sigmon was called to the pitching circle in the first inning and went six innings giving up three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out eight.
- Cyr went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
- Kara Salvo and Kimrey had a pair of hits. - Western Carolina out-hit Jacksonville State eight to six.
- Buchanan took the loss falling to 0-1.

Turning Point
Western Carolina scored two runs in the third and sixth and exploded for three runs in the seventh inning.

How it Happened
- Western Carolina scored a pair of runs in the third inning spurred by Karley Harkey's double. Harkey scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Abigail Daniels. Another fielder's choice by Sigmon scored Daniels.
- The Catamounts added a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Sigmon led off with a double and Price walked. Harkey had her second extra base hit of the game when she hit an RBI triple to score Sigmon and Price.
- Cyr came up big in the top of the seventh with a three-run homerun set up by a walk to Anna Hughey and a Salvo single.
- Drexel avoided the shutout scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch by Sigmon with runners on second and third.

Inside the Box Score
- Western Carolina had 11 hits in the game,
- Freshman hurler Lily Hayes started the game, going three scoreless innings, giving up three hits, one walk and striking out one. 
- For the second straight game, Sigmon came in a relief pitcher tossing four innings allowing one hit, one run, striking out six and yielding two walks. Sigmon earned her first win of the season.
- Salvo, Cyr, Harkey and Sigmon each had two hits in the game.
- Drexel had four hits in the game.

News & Notes
- Harkey hit the fifth triple of her career moving her to second place in the Catamount record books for career triples. She needs one triple to tie former Catamount Erin Foster and two to take the lead.
- Over the first two games on the year, Western Carolina has 19 hits averaging nine hits in the two games ... The Catamounts also have 13 runs in the first two games of the year.
- All three Catamount freshman, Madison Armstrong, Hunter Gibbons and Hayes saw action in the opening games of the season.
