CHARLESTON, S.C. - Western Carolina softball swept day two of the Charleston Southern Tournament in grand fashion Saturday at CSU Softball Stadium. The Catamounts squeezed by Boston University 5-4 and used senior shortstop Karley Harkey's grand-slam to come from behind to defeat host Charleston Southern 6-5.
Turning Point
Trailing 4-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Western Carolina scored a pair of runs to take a 5-4 lead. The Catamounts fended off the Boston University game-tying base runner in the top of the seventh with a strikeout and a fly out to end the game.
How it Happened
- Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Amber Kimrey was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After Crystal Cyr singled and Taylor Sigmon was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded. Kimrey scored on a Terrier wild pitch. - Cyr gave WCU a 2-0 lead with one swing of the bat with a homerun to center field in the bottom of the third.
- Boston University cut the Catamount lead to one, 2-1, with a run in the top of the fourth.
- In the top of the fifth, Boston took its first lead of the game, 3-2, with a pair of runs.
- WCU knotted the game at three with a two out rally. Hunter Gibbons was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored thanks to an RBI double by Madison Armstrong.
- The pesky Terrier team wouldn't go away and grasped the lead back, 4-3, with a run in the top of the sixth.
- Western Carolina took command of the game when it scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 5-4. With one out, pinch hitter Abigail Daniels reached first on a Boston throwing error and advanced to second on the error. Daniels moved to third when Kara Salvo flew out and scored off an RBI single by Cyr. After Sigmon singled there were Catamounts at first and second with Kassandra Flores in to pinch run for Cyr. Flores scored when Courtney Price hit the game-winning RBI to right field.

Turning Point
Trailing 5-2 in the top of the seventh, Harkey hit a grand-slam to give WCU the first lead of the game, 6-5, and eventual win.
How it Happened
- Charleston Southern scored in the bottom of the first inning after a hit by a pitch and a walk set up a sacrifice fly.
- The Buccaneers added two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
- Price and Gibbons hit back-to-back homeruns in the top of the fifth to cut the Buccaneer lead to 3-2.
- Charleston Southern added a key run in the bottom of the fifth to put the Buccaneers back up by two, 4-2.
- Charleston Southern tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single.
- Western Carolina scored four unanswered runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and the win. A pair of singles by and pinch hitter Hughey along with a walk to Gibbons loaded the bases. Harkey made the Buccaneers pay crushing a grand-slam over the centerfield wall.
- Sigmon came into the game in relief with one out and runners at first and second, in the bottom of the second, to force the next two Buccaneers to fly out and ground out to tend the inning and the game.
Inside the Box Score
- After having only one hit in the first four innings, Western Carolina exploded for seven hits including three homeruns.
- All three Catamount pitchers saw action in the game with Hayes getting the start. She went 3.1 innings before being replaced by Courtney Buchanan. In 3.0 innings of work, Buchanan allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five earning the winning and improving to 3-1 on the season. Sigmon came into the game in the seventh and earns her first save on the year.
- WCU had three homeruns in the game the most in a game this season.
News & Notes
- Western Carolina has had at least one homerun in the last six games.
- Cyr kept her hitting streak alive having hit safely in all nine games to start the season but Sigmon had her eight-game hitting streaks snapped.
- The five runs scored by WCU, against Boston University, is the least amount of runs scored by the Catamounts in a win to start the season.
- Freshman Gibbons has hit two homeruns in the last three games.
- Harkey's grand-slam against Charleston Southern is her second of the season.
