CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women’s tennis took down USC Upstate 6-1 in Friday’s action that was moved due to inclement weather. The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday but a fast moving storm caused the match to be moved.
"I'm very happy with where our team is right now with our games and the progress we have made this year. Each girl on our team is capable of great things and when you have everyone working hard in practice it gives everyone confidence that we can achieve a lot as a team.”, said head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins.
Seniors Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol started the match by winning 6-0 at the No. 1 doubles over Anna Zoske and Filippa Ericson.
Sophomore Montse Mesalles and freshman Gaby Hurt clinched the doubles point at No. 3 by defeating Anna Nemeth and Ruby Kubac 6-0.
At No. 2 doubles senior Megan McLinden and freshman Savannah Taranto were unable to complete the sweep and lost to Vale Zarama and Carol Sigaki 6-4.
Senior Nicole Nielly at No. 5 got the victory over Nemeth 6-0,6-2 to gain the first singles point, followed closely by freshman Alexa Webb defeating Kubac 6-0, 6-1 to help keep the pressure on the Spartans at No. 6.
Kissell clinched the match at No. 1 with her 6-0, 6-3 victory over Zoske. Taranto continued to stay hot in singles play moving in the No. 3 spot and defeating Sigaki 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore Elizabeth Ansari lost a close battle with Zarama 7-5, 6-4 and McLinden closed out the scoring with her 2-6, 7-5, 14-12 win over Ericson.
Kissell-Eddins stated, “We are really looking forward to our match Sunday against App State and we hope to get a good crowd out here to support the girls".
The 6-1 win improves Western Carolina’s record to 5-2 on the season and drops USC Upstate to 0-7. Up next for the Catamounts on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex is Appalachian State.
