ATLANTA, Ga. - Western Carolina softball was swept by Georgia State 11-4, 10-5 Wednesday at Heck Stadium. Sophomore Anna Hughey hit the first grand-slam of her career in the first game.
Turning Point
Georgia State scored seven runs in the first three innings off two homeruns, including a grand-slam.
How it Happened
- Georgia State took an early 3-0 lead from a three-run homerun by Kensey Caldwell.
- The Panthers tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the third off a grand-slam by Arden Jobe and tacked on four more rune before the inning ended.
- Western Carolina avoided the shutout scoring four runs in the top of the fourth off the bat of pinch-hitter Hughey who hit the first grand-slam of her career. WCU got bases loaded with a lead-off single by Crystal Cyr, a pinch hit single by Kassandra Flores and a one-out walk by Karley Harkey. Hughey's grand-slam cleared the bases for WCU.
Inside the Box Score
- Lily Hayes got the start and went 2.1 give up eight runs on six hits and struck out one. Hayes takes the loss and falls to 7-3 on the season.
- Taylor Sigmon came into the game relieving Hayes going 3.2 innings allowing three runs on four hits and struck out three.
- Western Carolina had seven hits in the game and gave up 10 to Georgia State.
- Georgia State had two homeruns in the game. - Cyr was 2-for-3 in the game and scored a run.
Turning Point
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Georgia State plated seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
How it Happened
- With bases loaded, starting Catamount pitcher walked in a run in the top of the first to give Georgia State a 1-0 lead. Buchanan recovered to get back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to end the inning.
- Western Carolina took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a two-run homerun by Crystal Cyr. Courtney Price led off with a single and scored on the Cyr homerun.
- Georgia State tied the game off an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
- Western Carolina re-claimed the lead in the top of fourth off an RBI single by Hughey. Victoria Mariscal led off with single and scored off an RBI single past the third base by Hughey.
- Georgia State scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Panthers added one run in the bottom of the sixth.
- Western Carolina attempted a rally in the top of the seventh inning but could only push across two runs. Salvo led off with a double and motored to third on a single by Price. Cyr scorched a single up the middle for two RBI scoring Salvo and Price.
Inside the Box Score
- Courtney Buchanan got the start and did not get the decision. She went three innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits struck out two.
- Sigmon came in for Buchanan in the fourth but did not record an out. She gave up five runs on two hits and takes the loss. She falls to 4-6 on the year.
- Hayes replaced Sigmon with no outs in the fourth and closed out the inning and the game. She closed out the game going three innings allowing two runs on five hits and striking out one.
- Mariscal, Kara Salvo, Cyr, Harkey and Price each had a pair of hits in the game. - Cyr led the team with four RBI.
- Georgia State had 12 hits in the game and Western Carolina ended the game with 11.
- WCU committed two errors in the game.
News & Notes
- Hughey hit the first grand-slam of her career. It was also the third for the team as a whole.
- Cyr hit her seventh homerun of the season, against Georgia State, which is one shy of tying her season-high of eight from the 2015 season.
- Western Carolina was swept in a doubleheader for the first time this season.
- The Catamounts had two homeruns in the doubleheader against Georgia State pushing their career total to 23 on the year. Those 23 homeruns ranks seventh in the WCU record books for homeruns in a season.
- Western Carolina has hit at least one homerun in the last three games and five of the last six games.
