Softball Hits Combined Four Homeruns in Sweep of Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Western Carolina softball hit a total of four homeruns, in two games, in the doubleheader sweep of Charlotte Wednesday downing the 49ers 2-1, 10-1 at Phillips Softball Complex. Abigail Daniels and Kassandra Flores hit the first homeruns of their career in the pair of games.

Turning Point
Abigail Daniels hit the first homerun of her career in the top of the sixth inning, a two-run shot, giving Western Carolina a 2-1 lead and eventual win over Charlotte.

How it Happened
- With one out, Charlotte got back-to-back walks and a Catamount error loads the bases for the 49ers in the bottom of the fifth. Charlotte scored on an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Erin Powers. - In the top of the sixth, Sigmon led off with a single up the middle. With one out, Abigail Daniels hit a homerun to right field that just cleared the ivy covered fence at Charlotte by an inch for the two RBI long ball.
- Although Western Carolina had two errors in the game, the Catamounts has some strong defensive plays to hold the 49ers to one run including back-to-back double plays to end an inning and a line-out snag by Brooke Coggins at first to end the game.

Inside the Box Score
- Sigmon tossed her third complete game of the year allowing one run on five hits and struck out five improving to 5-6 on the year.
- Charlotte got five hits and Western Carolina had three.
- Daniels paced WCU with a run, a hit and two RBI.
- Sigmon broke up Charlotte pitcher Lexi Betancourt's no-hitter attempt with a single in the top of the sixth.
- Karley Harkey had the third hit of the game for WCU in the top of the seventh.

Turning Point
Hunter Gibbons three-run homerun in the top of the third inning broke the game wide open with WCU holding onto a 2-0 lead. Her three-run bomb chased Charlotte starter Haley Wiseman out of the game.

How it Happened
- With one out in the first inning, Kara Salvo was hit by a pitch and Courtney Price followed with a single down the right field line. A wild pitch moved Price to second and Salvo to third. Designated player Hunter Gibbons hit a hot shot to right field that popped out of the 49er right fielder's glove scoring Salvo and Price.
- Salvo led off the third inning with a single to right field. With one out, Crystal Cyr singled past second base and moved to second while Salvo motored to third. Gibbons hit a monster shot to left field for a three RBI homerun. Harkey continued the inning with a single and Victoria Mariscal followed with a double. Sigmon picked up a pair of RBI with a single up the middle. WCU scored five runs in the top of third.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Charlotte's Haley Pace hit a solo homerun to left field.
- Harkey hit her fifth homerun of the season leading off the fifth inning with a solo shot. Mariscal followed Harkey's homerun with a walk and moved to second on a groundout by Sigmon. Pinch hitter Kassandra Flores hit the first homerun of her career - a two run shot that just stayed fair in left field.

Inside the Box Score - Western Carolina shorted the game to five scoring 10 runs in the game. - Junior pitcher Courtney Buchanan tossed the five inning complete game. She improves to 7-1 on the year allowing one run on three hits and struck out seven. - Western Carolina hit three homeruns in the game with two of the homeruns with runners on base. - Western Carolina had 12 hits in the game. - Cyr, Harkey and Sigmon each had a pair of hits in the game.

News & Notes
- Daniels hit the first homerun of her career in the first game against Charlotte.
- Gibbons hit the fourth homerun of the season in the second game against Charlotte.
- Western Carolina has hit at least one homerun in eight of the last nine games and is riding a five game streak of a homerun in a game. Western Carolina has 27 homeruns in 29 games.
- Harkey is on a five-game hitting streak while teammate Cyr has hit safely in the last four games. - Western Carolina has hit two or more homeruns in five games this season after hitting three long balls in game two against Charlotte.
- Charlotte is the second Conference-USA school WCU has faced this season. Earlier this season, the Catamounts split a pair of games at Western Kentucky falling 8-4 before bouncing back to shut out the Hilltoppers 1-0. WCU is 3-1 this season against Conference USA teams.
- Western Carolina has swept Charlotte in back-to-back seasons and is now 6-1 against them all time.

Western Carolina opens Southern Conference play traveling to ETSU Friday for a three game series. The Catamounts and Buccaneers square off Friday with a doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m. and the series concluding Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast online on the Catamount Sports Network.
