Softball Earns 5-2 Win over Austin Peay to Close Out Play at Georgia Tourney

ATHENS, Ga. - Western Carolina softball closed out play at the 13th Annual Georgia Softball Classic with a 5-2 win over Austin Peay Sunday at Jack Turner Stadium. The Catamounts went 3-2 at the tournament.

Turning Point
Western Carolina scored all five of its runs in the top of the third inning.

How it Happened
- Austin Peay jumped on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first. With two outs, an RBI single scored a run for the Governors, as the run scored before a runner was thrown out at second.
- The Catamounts took the lead in the top of the third scoring five runs. Amber Kimrey got things started when she was hit by a pitch to open the third. Abigail Daniels followed with a single putting runners on first and second. Kara Salvo hit a two RBI triple to left field for the Catamounts first runs of the game. After Taylor Sigmon reached on a fielder's choice, Crystal Cyr hit an RBI double to score Salvo. Sigmon scored courtesy of an RBI single by Madison Armstrong. Karley Harkey's RBI single to left center plated Armstrong for the fifth run of the game.
- In the bottom of the third Austin Peay got a run back to trail WCU 5-2.

Inside the Box Score
- Lily Hayes got the start for WCU and went five innings allowing two runs on five hits and struck out five. She got the win and improves to 5-2 on the season.
- Sigmon came in to relieve Hayes in the bottom of the sixth after Hayes gave up back-to-back singles. Sigmon forced a double play and then got a ground out to end the inning. She threw two scoreless innings striking out five and picked up her fourth save of the year.
- Cyr led the team with a pair of hits and also had an RBI and a run.
- Salvo's hit was a big one - a triple which yielded two RBI giving WCU a then 2-1 lead. She also scored a run. - Western Carolina and Austin Peay each had seven hits in the game.

News & Notes
- Kara Salvo hit the first triple of her career on Sunday against Austin Peay.
- Six of the Catamounts nine players in the starting line-up got a hit in the game against Austin Peay.
- Western Carolina has four triples in the first 21 games of 2016 tying for 6th place, with the 2009 team, for triples in a season.
- Western Carolina's record of 14-7 is just the third time in the program's 10-year history the Catamounts have had an above .500 record after 20 or 21 games.
- Western Carolina completed play in the tournament portion of its season with a record of 14-6.
- The Catamounts will play its first home games of the season on March 10 hosting SIUE. WCU played its first 21 games of the year on the road.
- Western Carolina's pitching staff has given up only four homeruns in 132 innings pitched. - Sigmon earned her second save of the weekend and her fourth of the season pushing her career total to 16 -- for which she holds the school record.
- Salvo is on a four-game hitting streak.
- As a team, Western Carolina has 46 extra base hits (28 doubles, four triples and 14 homeruns) in the first 21 games of the season.
