The Basics

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Western Carolina softball was swept by Chattanooga 4-3, 12-2 (five innings) Sunday at the Catamount Softball Complex dropping its first Southern Conference series of the season. The Catamounts won game one 3-0 on Saturday.

Turning Point
Tied 3-3, Chattanooga scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to take the 4-3 lead. Two straight three up and three downs by the Mocs' defense ended any Catamount rally attempt.

How it Happened
- Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead with a solo homerun by Crystal Cyr.
- Chattanooga scored three runs in the top of the third.
- The Catamounts plated a run in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Sigmon hit a lead-off double and stole third. Victoria Mariscal's RBI single plated Sigmon.
- Western Carolina tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Abigail Daniels led off with a single to centerfield and scored courtesy of an RBI single by Cyr.
- Chattanooga scored the decisive run in the top of the sixth.

Inside the Box Score
- Freshman pitcher Lily Hayes returned to the mound after missing 13 games due to injury getting the start in the first game of the doubleheader. She went 2.2 innings allowing three runs on four hits and struck out one. She got the no decision.
- Sigmon replaced Hayes in the third inning. She took the loss in the game and falls to 10-9 on the season. Sigmon went 4.1 innings allowing one run on three hits and struck out four.
- Cyr and Harkey each had a pair of hits in the game.
- Western Carolina had some strong defensive plays including a couple of shoe top catches by Harkey and Courtney Price and a runner thrown out at third.

Turning Point
Chattanooga scored 12 runs over the course of the first five innings, including hitting three homeruns, to put the game out of reach for Western Carolina and shorten the game to five innings.

How it Happened
-Chattanooga took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off a solo homerun by Sam Taylor and an RBI single by Katie Corum.
- Western Carolina scored a run in the bottom of the second to cut the Mocs' lead to 2-1. Price led off with a single and scored on a Chattanooga error.
- Chattanooga exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth, including hitting two homeruns in the inning.
- Western Carolina scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the third. After a single by Daniels and a double by Kara Salvo led off the inning, Daniels was erased at home plate when Madison Armstrong hit into a fielder's choice. Cyr hit a fielder's choice RBI to score Salvo.
- Chattanooga scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to shorten the game to five.

Inside the Box Score
- Junior pitcher Courtney Buchanan started the game and took the loss falling to 10-3 on the season. She gave up 12 runs on 15 hits and struck out seven.
- Chattanooga had 15 hits in the game and WCU had five.
- None of WCU's batters had multiple hits in the game.
- Western Carolina had a lead-off batter reach base in four of the five innings.

News & Notes
- Western Carolina dropped its first Southern Conference series of the season losing two of three to Chattanooga. Western Carolina took game one, on Saturday, against the Mocs 3-0.
- Salvo had her consecutive games on base streak snapped at 16 in game one against Chattanooga on Sunday.
- Cyr hit her 11th homerun of the season moving her into a tie for fifth place for homeruns in a season.
- With the pair of hits in the doubleheader on Sunday, Sigmon has 166 career hits and sits in fourth place for hits in the WCU record books. She needs five hits to move into third place.
- Western Carolina was swept in a doubleheader for the first time since dropping two at Georgia State on March 16.
- Price is on a five-game hitting streak and Cyr has reached base safely in the last nine games.
- Western Carolina has 42 homeruns this season ranking the team third in the WCU record books for homeruns in a season. The Catamounts need three homeruns to overtake second place set by the 2012 team who had 44.
- As a team, Western Carolina is one win away from moving into a tie for second place for wins in a season. The Catamounts have 27 wins in 2016 and one win will tie the 2007 team who had 28 and two wins will give the 2016 club second place out right.
- Cyr's 40 RBI ranks her tied for sixth in the WCU record books for RBI in a season.
- Salvo was hit by a pitch for the 14th time this season which ties her for first place in the WCU record books for being hit by a pitch.
