BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Western Carolina was swept by Virginia Tech 1-0, 11-3 Tuesday in the Catamounts final non-conference doubleheader of the season at Tech Softball Park.
Turning Point
Virginia Tech scored the decisive lone run in the bottom of the fourth. A Catamount error allowed the lead-off batter Olivia Lattin to reach first and she went around to score off an RBI single by Caitlyn Nolan.

How it Happened
- Virginia Tech scored five runs in the bottom of the first, including a three-run homerun by Emma Strouth, to put the Hokies up early and they never looked back in the game. The Hokies batted around in the inning.
- Western Carolina got two runs back in the top of the second. With one out, Crystal Cyr singled through the left side. With two outs, Victoria Mariscal hit a two run homerun scoring herself and Cyr.
- The Hokies got two runs back in the bottom of the second when Strouth struck again with a two RBI double. The two runs were set up by back-to-back walks.
- Virginia Tech tacked on a run in the third off a solo homerun by Lattin.
- For the second straight inning Western Carolina hit a homerun with Cyr's solo shot in the top of the fourth.
- Lattin hit her second homerun of the game to lead off the fifth.
- Bottom of the sixth Virginia Tech's Caroline Schoenewald hit a two-run homerun to shorten the game to six innings.
Inside the Box Score
- Virginia Tech scored eight runs in the first three innings and scored in all but one inning.
- Courtney Buchanan got the start and went 2.2 innings before being lifted for Sigmon. Buchanan gave up eight runs, six earned, walked seven and struck out one. She takes the loss and falls to 12-4 on the season. - Western Carolina had five hits while Virginia Tech had nine.

- Western Carolina is suffering from its longest losing streak of the season having lost three straight.
- Sigmon's nine strikeouts in game one, and one strikeouts in game two, gives her 376 strikeouts in her career. She needs seven strikeouts to take over second place in the Catamount record books which would usurp former Catamount Mendy McKenzie who ended her career with 382.
- Mariscal hit her second homerun of the season in game two against Virginia Tech.
- Cyr hit her 14th homerun of the season and 22nd of her career. The 14 homeruns in the season moves Cyr to a tie for third place in the WCU record books. Her 22 career homeruns gives her sole possession of third place. She needs two homeruns to take over second place.
- Western Carolina ended the non-conference portion of its season with a record of 24-13.

Western Carolina travels to Furman this weekend for the Catamounts final Southern Conference road series of the year. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. Game one will be broadcast on the American Sports Network. The Sunday single game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
