SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Western Carolina dropped a single game to USC Upstate 4-0 Wednesday at Cyrill Stadium.
Turning Point:
USC Upstate scored runs in the first, third and fourth innings to shut out Western Carolina in the single game. The Catamounts had runners in scoring position in three different innings but couldn't push a run across.
How it Happened:
USC Upstate scored a run in the first inning, two in the third and a run in the fourth to secure the win. Western Carolina had key scoring chances in the third, fourth and fifth inning, including bases loaded in the fourth, but failed to score.
Inside the Box Score:
- Western Carolina and USC Upstate each had five hits in the game.
- Sophomore pitcher Shaina Reed got the start in the game and went two innings allowing three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out three. Reed falls to 1-1 on the season.
- Senior hurler Courtney Buchanan closed out the game going four innings, allowing one run on one hit, allowing a walk and striking out two.
- Abigail Daniels, Madison Armstrong, Ashlyn Long, Erica Hayes and Emily Weatherman each had hits in the game.
News & Notes:
- Kara Salvo was hit by a pitch twice in the game overtaking the record for being hit by a pitch the in WCU record books being plunked 35 times in her career.
- Western Carolina takes a three-game losing streak into the tournament at North Florida beginning Friday.
- The Catamounts were shutout for the first time this season in the loss to the Spartans.
