Softball Splits Doubleheader at Presbyterian Wednesday

The Basics:
Score: Presbyterian 11, Western Carolina 3 (5); Western Carolina 3, Presbyterian 2
Records: Western Carolina 6-12, Presbyterian 11-19
Location: Clinton, S.C., PC Softball Complex

CLINTON, S.C. -- Courtney Price went 3-for-3 and Hunter Gibbons hit a two-run homerun as Western Carolina softball took game two against Presbyterian, 3-2, after dropping game one 11-3, in five innings, Wednesday at the PC Softball Field.

Turning Point:
Presbyterian scored four runs in the first inning and posted runs in four of the five innings played for the win.

How it Happened:
Presbyterian scored four runs in the first inning for the early 4-0 lead. The Catamounts got on the scoreboard in the top of the third on a RBI groundout by Abigail Daniels. After the Blue Hose added two runs in the bottom of the third, Western Carolina cut the Presbyterian lead in half with two runs in the top of the fourth to trail 6-3 with RBI singles by Courtney Price and Erica Hayes. Presbyterian scored five runs, two in the fourth and three in the fifth, for the 11-3 win shortening the game to five innings.

Inside the Box Score:
- Presbyterian College had 13 hits in the game and Western Carolina had four.
- The Catamounts committed four errors.
- Courtney Buchanan got the start and tossed three innings giving up six runs on eight hits and struck out two. She takes the loss and falls to 1-6 on the year.
- Freshman pitcher Kinsey Liscio came into the game in relief going 1.0 innings giving up five runs, two earned, on five hits and struck out one.

Turning Point:
With Presbyterian leading 2-1, Catamount sophomore Hunter Gibbons hit a two-run homerun to give Western Carolina the go-ahead runs and eventual win.

How it Happened:
Western Carolina scored the first run of the game, on the second hit of the contest, when Price hit a triple and proceeded to score on a Blue Hose error in the fourth. Presbyterian took a short-lived 2-1 lead in the fifth inning courtesy of three Catamount errors. The Catamounts re-took the lead when Price hit a two-out single and was sent home on the homerun to left field by Gibbons. Presbyterian had the tying run on third and go-ahead run at second, with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout and called strike three ended the Blue Hose's rally attempt.

Inside the Box Score:
- Price went 3-for-3 in the game and scored two runs.
- Gibbons hit her third homerun of the season.
- Sophomore lefty hurler Lily Hayes got the start and tossed her third complete game of the season. She went 7.0 innings giving up two runs, neither earned, on eight hits, walked two and struck out eight. She improves to 4-4 on the season.
- Western Carolina had six hits in the game and Presbyterian had eight.

News & Notes:
- With the win in game two against Presbyterian, Western Carolina halts a seven-game losing streak.
- Price scored three runs in the doubleheader with Presbyterian and now has 99 in her career. She needs two runs to over third place and 10 away from claiming the school record and eclipsing the mark of 108 held jointly by former Catamounts Stephanie Beatty and Amelia Griffin.
- The record watch continues for Price as she has 169 career hits and needs two to take over fourth place. On the doubles front, Price has 30 in her career and needs three to snap the record.
- Gibbons homerun against Presbyterian is the first homerun by the Catamounts, as a team, in five games since hitting a homerun in the second game against Bethune-Cookman.
- Lily Hayes eight strikeouts against Presbyterian, is a career record for strikeouts in a game for the Calhoun, Ga. native.

Up Next:
