GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Western Carolina softball dropped the final game of the three-game Southern Conference series with UNCG 7-3 Sunday at UNCG Softball Complex.
Turning Point:
With the game tied at one, headed to the bottom of the second, UNCG scored four runs in the bottom of the second, off three straight homeruns, to retake the lead and secure the series sweep.
How it Happened:
UNCG scored first plating a run in the bottom of the first. Western Carolina tied the game in the top of the second courtesy of two Spartan errors and an RBI single by Shaina Reed. UNCG put the game out of reach exploding for four runs in the bottom of the second, including hitting three straight homeruns to pull away for the win. WCU scored a run in the bottom of the third when Courtney Price hit a lead-off single and went around to score off a RBI double by Madison Armstrong. UNCG hit its fourth homerun of the game in the bottom of the third -- a two-run shot to push its lead to 7-2. WCU tacked on its third run of the game in the top of the fourth when pinch-hitter Emily Castro hit an RBI single to score Kara Salvo who hit a double to reach base to make the score 7-3. WCU held the Spartans scoreless in the final three innings.
Inside the Box Score:
- UNCG hit four homeruns in the game including two with a runner on base.
- Sophomore pitcher Lily Hayes got the start in the game and went one inning before being lifted in the second inning after giving up a walk and three straight homeruns to the Spartans in the second inning. She takes the loss and falls to 4-6 on the year.
- Courtney Buchanan replaced Hayes in the second with no outs and got the Catamounts out of the inning. Overall, she went five innings giving up two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out five.
- Western Carolina had seven hits in the game and UNCG had nine.
- Price went 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored.
- Salvo and Armstrong each had doubles in the game.
News & Notes:
- With a single in the first inning, Price has now reached base safely in the last nine games.
- With the loss to UNCG on Sunday, WCU is now suffering through a five-game losing streak.
- WCU will finally host a home game on Wednesday having played its first 23 games of the season on the road.
- On the heels of breaking the doubles record on Saturday, Price adds another record to her list of accomplishments taking the record for total bases. She now holds the record with 174 total bases in her career.
- Kara Salvo hit the 30th double of her career in the top of the fourth to begin her quest to dethrone teammate Price from the doubles school record. Price holds the school record with 33 and Salvo now ranks third in the WCU record books with 30.
Up Next:
Western Carolina will host Charlotte Wednesday in the Catamounts' home opener. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex.
