The Basics:

RADFORD, Va. -- Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games, in non-conference action, Wednesday falling to Radford 5-4, 3-0 at the Radford Softball Complex. The game was highlighted by Catamount freshman Erica Hayes' inside the park homerun in game one of the doubleheader.
Turning Point:
Radford scored five runs in the bottom of the third and held on for the 5-4 win.
How it Happened:
Western Carolina scored first plating a run in the top of the third courtesy of a RBI single by Courtney Price. Radford exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third. After two scoreless innings, Western Carolina made it interesting scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. It all began with a one-out walk to Kara Salvo. Shaina Reed hit a double to left center pushing runners to second and third. With two outs, Erica Hayes hit a frozen rope to left field and it rattled around into foul territory in left field allowing E. Hayes to motor around and touch all the bases for an inside the park homerun scoring three runs. WCU was sat down in order in the seventh to thwart any kind of a rally attempt by the Catamounts.
Inside the Box Score:
- For the second straight game, WCU gave up a big scoring inning in the first three innings of a game to opponents. This time, Radford scored five runs in the bottom of the third.
- Western Carolina left eight runners on base in the game and had bases loaded twice.
- Lily Hayes got the start and takes the loss in the game. She went 2.2 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and falls to 5-8 on the season.
- L. Hayes was replaced with two outs in the bottom of the third by senior Courtney Buchanan who tossed 3.1 scoreless innings allowing just one hit. Buchanan struck out two and walked four.
- E. Hayes hit her third homerun of the season picking up three RBI and walked twice. - Reed had a pair of hits in the game.
Turning Point:
Radford scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game. The Highlanders tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and held the Catamounts to only one hit in the game.
How it Happened:
After three scoreless innings, Radford scored three unanswered runs to secure the win and doubleheader sweep.
Inside the Box Score:
- Western Carolina had just one hit in the game.
- Price had the only hit in the game, for WCU, and was on base twice as she was also hit by a pitch.
- Freshman hurler Kinsey Liscio started the fourth game of her career and took the loss falling to 0-3 on the year. Liscio tossed the first complete game of her career going six innings in the game. She gave up three runs on six hits and struck out four - three of them looking.
- Radford catcher Maggie Rowe's two-run homerun in the fourth inning broke open the game.
News & Notes:
- Western Carolina was shutout for the fifth time this season and the first time in 10 games.
- The Catamounts are now 1-5 against Big South opponents this season.
- Price moves into a tie for third place for hits in the Catamount record books with 179 career hits. She has some work to do to move into second place as she will need 15 hits to take over second place. - Price also moves into a tie in another Catamount record book category with 81 RBI she is now tied for fifth place.
- Salvo is tied for second in the record books for walks in a career with 68. She needs four walks to move into first place.
- Western Carolina is now on a three-game losing streak.
- WCU had its streak of 14-striaght games of hitting a double snapped in game two against Radford.
Up Next:
Western Carolina returns home Thursday to host North Carolina A&T at the Catamount Softball Complex. The game was moved up an hour with the doubleheader now set to begin at 3 p.m.
