The Basics:
Score: Western Carolina 11, Chattanooga 2 (6); Western Carolina 6, Chattanooga 2

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- For the first time in 4,012 days, April 14, 2006, Western Carolina softball earned a doubleheader Southern Conference sweep of Chattanooga defeating the Mocs 11-2, in six innings, and 6-2 Saturday at Frost Stadium.

Turning Point:
Western Carolina scored 11 runs and turned a school record three double-plays to take game one against Chattanooga. WCU scored two runs apiece in the first three innings and exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to shorten the game to six innings.

How it Happened:
Each of the four innings Western Carolina scored the Catamounts got the lead-off batter on base. To that end, Western Carolina scored two runs each in the first, second and third. Sophomore Madison Armstrong got things started with a two-run homerun in the first inning. An RBI groundout by Ashlyn Long and an RBI single by Erica Hayes equated to two runs in the second inning to make the score 4-0. Chattanooga sliced the Catamount lead to 4-2 scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second but WCU got them right back scoring two runs in the top of the third. Armstrong led off with a double and scored on the second double of the inning courtesy of an RBI double by Hunter Gibbons. Kara Salvo's RBI single up the middle scored Gibbons. Western Carolina used a pair of homeruns in the top of the sixth to shorten the game. Gibbons hit a three-run homerun and Shaina Reed followed with a two-run shot.

Inside the Box Score:
- Western Carolina turned a school record three double plays in the game.
- As a team, Western Carolina hit three homeruns.
- All but one Catamount who came to the plate got on base.
- Gibbons was 4-for-4 in the game with two runs scored and four RBI.
- Armstrong was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
- Western Carolina's 16 hits in the game was just one hit shy of tying the season-high of 17 set against La Salle.
- Reed got the start in the circle and lasted 1.1 innings before she was lifted in the second inning. Reed allowed two runs on five hits.
- Lily Hayes replaced Reed with one out in the second inning and took the victory improving to 5-7 on the year. L. Hayes tossed a two-hit shutout in 4.2 innings of work walking one and striking out two.

Turning Point:
Western Carolina scored six runs in the top of the first and rode that score to victory.

How it Happened:
Western Carolina opened game two scoring six runs in the top of the first. WCU scoring began with a lead-off double by Long. E. Hayes hit the second homerun of her career to give WCU a 2-0 lead. After Armstrong drew a walk, Gibbons hit her second homerun of the day to make the score 4-0. Three straight singles by Cheyenne Mathews, Reed and Salvo set up a two-RBI double by Abigail Daniels to give WCU a 6-0 lead. Chattanooga avoided a shutout scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make things interesting but Western Carolina held off the Mocs for the win.

Inside the Box Score:
- Western Carolina's Mathews ended a streak of 14-straight batters Chattanooga relief pitcher Celie Hudson sat down with a single in the sixth inning.
- Mocs' pitcher Maddy Adams started the game and failed to record an out. She allowed four runs on three hits and was lifted for Hudson in the top of the first. Hudson went on to toss seven innings allowing seven hits, two runs and struck out two. Adams takes the loss falling to 1-2 on the year.
- Catamount senior hurler Courtney Buchanan got the start for WCU becoming one of three Catamount pitchers who saw action in the game. Buchanan got the win improving to 3-7 on the year. She went five innings tossing five scoreless innings before the Mocs scored a pair of runs in the sixth. She gave up two runs on three hits and struck out three.
- Freshman Kinsey Liscio replaced Buchanan in the sixth inning and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings allowing four hits and striking out two.
- L. Hayes saw action on the mound for the second time in the doubleheader replacing Liscio in the seventh innings. She entered the game with two runners on and one out. L. Hayes forced two groundouts to end the game. - Western Carolina had 10 hits in the game and gave up seven to Chattanooga.
- Gibbons, Mathews and Salvo each had a pair of hits in the game.

News & Notes:
- Western Carolina's 11-2 game-one win against Chattanooga is the first Catamount victory in Chattanooga, Tenn. and Frost Stadium since WCU's inaugural season in 2006 defeating the Mocs 5-0 on April 14, 2006.
- WCU combined for 16 hits in the two games against the Mocs.
- The six runs scored by Western Carolina, in game two against Chattanooga, is the most runs scored by WCU in the first inning this season.
- Courtney Price has her 11-game hitting streak snapped in game one against the Mocs. She had her 12-game reached base safely streak broken in game two against Chattanooga.
- Western Carolina had double-digit hits in both games against Chattanooga, 16 in game one and 10 in game two, for a combined 26 hits in the pair of games. - Armstrong had her seven-game hitting streak snapped.
- Gibbons has hit a homerun in the last three games and has a total of seven homeruns this season - a season-high for the left-fielder.
- Armstrong and Gibbons each have 11 doubles this season which ties them for fourth in the WCU record books. The duo is chasing the single-season record of 14 set by Stephanie Beatty in 2007. - Armstrong and Long have each reached base safely in the last eight games. - Gibbons and E. Hayes are each on a six-game hitting streak.
- In the last three games, Gibbons is hitting .636 with seven hits, three homeruns, two doubles, eight RBI and four runs scored.
- In the two appearances of the doubleheader against Chattanooga, L. Hayes did not allow a run in 5.1 innings pitched allowing just two hits and yielding one walk.
