Catamounts Drop Heartbreaker to Wofford 54-48

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball dropped a heartbreaker, 54-48, to Wofford Saturday in the Ramsey Center. It was the opening game of a doubleheader with men's basketball.

The Catamounts led for two-plus periods before giving up the lead to Wofford with 44 seconds left in the third period to trail 37-36. The Terrier lead was capped off a 14-7 third period and Wofford never trailed again.

Western Carolina had a strong first and second period but stalled in the middle of the third period and into the fourth. From 4:18 in the third period until 6:35 left in the fourth WCU did not score allowing Wofford to go on a 12-0 run and secure the game.

The Catamounts had three players score in double figures with Angel Allen, Julia Brown and Nikki Johnson each scoring 10 points.

Turning Point
Wofford went on a 12-0 run from 4:18 left in the third period to 6:35 remaining in the fourth to come from behind for the win.

Individual Leaders
- Allen tied her career-high with 10 points and also ripped down seven rebounds.
- Johnson also had 10 points hitting a pair of three-pointers.
- Brown had 10 points and five rebounds.
- Sherae Bonner came off the bench to score eight points and also added eight rebounds along with a block and two assists.
- Wofford's Marissa Bayer led all scorers with 16 points.

Inside the Box Score
- Wofford scored 31 of its 54 points in the second half.
- The Catamounts were held scoreless for over eight minutes from the middle of the third period to the middle of the fourth.
- Western Carolina had a season-low 12 turnovers in the game. Wofford had eight.
- Western Carolina and Wofford each went to the line 12 times with WCU hitting seven and Wofford nine.
- The Terriers were 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game.
- Western Carolina had a 10 point lead twice in the game.
- Wofford shot 35 percent from the field while WCU shot 32.1 percent.

- For the ninth time this season, Western Carolina can't hold a halftime lead forgoing it in the second half to drop the game.
- Western Carolina played just eight players in the game with three (Judith Martin Ruiz, Johnson, and Allen) playing 30 or more minutes.
- With eight rebounds against Wofford, Bonner now has 787 in her career and needs just four rebounds to move from eighth place to seventh.
- Bonner's block in the game now gives her 126 in her career and needs just two blocks to move into third place. - With her 10 points against Wofford, Johnson has scored 88 points this season besting her career scoring mark from last season of 81.
- Western Carolina is now suffering through a four-game losing streak.
