Hatfield Records First Career Double-Double in Loss to Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --Senior Emily Hatfield scored her first career double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds, as Western Carolina women's basketball fell to Chattanooga 47-32 Saturday in McKenzie Arena.

After leading for most of the second and third period, Western Carolina gave up the lead before the end of the third period as the Mocs led 29-28 after three.

The Catamounts played stifling defense in the second period holding Chattanooga to just one field goal but scoring droughts were the death knell for Western Carolina. In the fourth period, Western Carolina hit just one field goal allowing Chattanooga to go from leading by one to end the third period to building a double-digit lead to close out the game.

Both teams shot below 30 percent with Chattanooga ending the game shooting 28 percent and Western Carolina at 26.

Turning Point
After leading most of the second and third period Western Carolina gave up 13 straight points from 14 seconds left in the third period until 3:59 in the fourth, when Hatfield hit one of two free throws.

Individual Leaders
-Hatfield led the Catamounts with a season-high 14 points just two points shy of tying her career-high. She also ripped down a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
- Julia Brown ended the game with nine points scoring the first seven points of the game for Western Carolina.
- JonTay Mitchem had three assists and two steals in the game and also scored four points.
- Keiana Gilbert led Chattanooga with 16 points.

Inside the Box Score 
- Western Carolina has a strong defensive presence in the second period only allowing one Chattanooga field goal and a total of six points. WCU held the Mocs to just two field goals over the course of 12 minutes, from 7:21 left in the second until 5:47 in the third.
- The Catamounts scored just four points in the fourth period all by Hatfield.
- Chattanooga had 43 rebounds in the game with 27 on the defensive end. The Catamounts ended the game with 35 rebounds and just 11 offensive boards.
- The Catamounts sliced their turnovers in half from the game at ETSU. After tying the season-high of 32 turnovers against the Buccaneers, Western Carolina had only 15 against Chattanooga.
- Western Carolina had 11 assists in the game.
- Chattanooga was awarded 17 trips to the free throw line hitting 13. Western Carolina went to the line just twice in the contest. The point differential in the game was 15.
