CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer defeated VMI 1-0 Sunday in its final regular season home game of the season. The Catamounts seven seniors, Shannon Burns, Alexa Frankeny, Eynde Frazier, Jacquelyn Gnassi, Megan McCallister, Sayres McKenna and Kayla Thomas, were honored before the game.

Turning Point:

Western Carolina scored 12 minutes into the game and held off VMI the remainder of the game to secure the win.

Individual Leaders

  • Junior Julia Winter scored the lone goal of the game for Western Carolina.
  • - Gnassi recorded six saves in the match and improves to 4-3-1 on the year.

 

Inside the Box Score

  • Winter got the Catamounts on the board at the 12th minute of the game. VMI goalkeeper Sidney Swoope was kicking the ball back into play when Winter intercepted it, dribbled past Swoope, and found the back of the net.
  • A late chance by VMI, near the end of the game, was denied a goal by the Catamount defense and senior Frankeny when the Keydets took a shot that pulled Gnassi out of the goal. Frankeny slipped into the right side of the goal and punched the ball away from the goal.
  • - Western Carolina had 16 shots in the match and VMI had 15.

 

News & Notes

  • - Western Carolina halted a three-game losing streak with the win over VMI.
  • - The Catamounts ended the 2018 home portion of the season with a record of 6-2-2. WCU only allowed opponents to score six goals at home and recorded five shutouts.  
  • - At home, Gnassi had a record of 4-1-1 and recorded three shutouts.
  • - Winter's goal was her second of the season.
  • - The Catamounts are now 6-0 against VMI and have not allowed the Keydets to score a goal on them.

Western Carolina closes out the regular season on the road with its final two SoCon road games of the season as the Catamounts travel to The Citadel on Friday and Mercer on Sunday.
